Josh Weil is the author of the novel The Great Glass Sea, a New York Times Editor’s Choice that was a finalist for the Center for Fiction’s Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Award, and the novella collection The New Valley, awarded the Sue Kaufman Prize from The American Academy of Arts and Letters and the New Writers Award from the GLCA. A Fulbright Fellow and National Book Award 5-under-35 honoree, he has written for The New York Times, Granta, Tin House, One Story, and Esquire, among others. Christopher Wolfe will read from The Great Glass Sea by Josh Weil. Wolfe is a actor-writer-director pursuing his MFA in Dramatic Arts at UC Davis. He is currently directing and developing iGeneration, a funny, moving, and physical investigation how smartphones affect us, to be performed April 7, 9, 11, and 12, at the Arena Theater, UC Davis. He recently performed as Sir Richard Plainman inThe Gambling Lady, a comedy of manners on the Main Stage at UCD. Previous performance and creative work include his two solo shows You Are Here (about storytelling, Carl Sagan, and worrying about the end of the world) and Generation 9/11, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2011 and toured in the US.
Vicky Mlyniec is a longtime resident of the Santa Cruz Mountains, where she lives with her husband, Paul. She enjoys working from home as an editor and helping other writers achieve their goals. Her short fiction has appeared in print and online in literary magazines and venues such as The North American Review, Bellingham Review, and The Saturday Evening Post. Her short story collection, I Ride Along & Other Stories, is currently a finalist for the St. Lawrence Book Award. Her stories have earned her the Tobias Wolff Fiction Award and a Pushcart Prize nomination, as well as fellowships at the Ragdale Foundation and the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts. Also an essay writer, she has published creative nonfiction in a variety of newspapers and national magazines. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College and a BA in Slavic Languages and Literatures from UC Berkeley.
Denise Hoffner will read “Higher Education” by Vicky Mlyniec. Brooklyn-born Hoffner is a stand-up comic, writer, activist, actor, lawyer, and crossing guard. She tells stories for children and adults, most recently at The Moth in Berkeley. Hoffner has performed in The Vagina Monologues, at Murder Mystery Dinner Shows, and LGBTQ Pride. She writes creative non-fiction.
